First Edition. Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York 1862, by D.T.Valentine (clerk of the Common Council-elected by the board of Aldermen). Printed by Edmund Jones & C0. in 1862. The book was given to somebody as a give by Charles H. Hall, by whom it is personally signed. This gentleman (C.H. Hal)l held the third seat of the Alderman Council in 1862, of which he represented the 4th district. A historical figure indeed. This book is full with all the information regarding the city of New York since its beginning. Information regarding all sorts of things going as far back as to when records began to be kept! That means 1653 to 1862, from the time it was New Amsterdam. I will list some of the many of the contents features in this book as I can until my fingers start to curl. There is also an added feature. This book comes with a total of 33 lithographs, all from the great masters Geo. Hayward and Major & Knapp. Of these, 17 are pullouts. Some are vividly colored and some are tinted. Some are from regiments marching out of N.Y. for the Civil War. While I am engaging you with this lengthy detailed explanation, we are downloading some sample photos of these magnificent lithos. The book gives a list of all the officers who were on city payroll in 1681, starting with the then Mayor George Opdyke who made $5,000 a year all the way through down to the guy who worked in the cemetery, a list of 32 pages of individuals as well as police depts. by district, medical staff, teachers, fire Depts. This book is an ideal research tool for historians, achaeologists geologists, politicians, or anybody with an interest of history with the city of New York. Most names given in this book also come with the addresses of the individual and their place of business. I believe that all the varied and extensive amoutn of information in this book will save anybody hundreds of hours of time in research going to archives or libraries. The historian or archaeologist can now pinpoint where such a building or pier once was. I have tried to look up some of the names of places or people on the interent noted in this book with no luck. Most of this information has to be researched in old archives in large dusty old volumes. Good luck. Condition. The covers are very worn and weak. The information in the book is all readable. There is some foxing throughout. There is also an old ink stain that invades the lover part of the book. It touches some of the lithos, mostly on a corner except two or three that have a 5th touching the litho but the images are all visable, Most of them are O.K. The tect is o.k. Most of the plates are frameable if that is your intention. I have taken some photos including the worst case of ink stain. They get better and some are free of stain.
